Apple to launch one notch-less iPhone in 2020, three in 2021

  • Apple could give up on Face ID at some point in the near future

However, the 2020 and 2021 iPhones are expected to be much more exciting.

According to Kuo, this notch is getting smaller in the iPhones that will appear on the market in 2020. It goes on to say that a future iPhone might arrive with both the Face ID system AND the optical fingerprint reader. While reducing the notch-size appears to be a short-term goal, in the long run, Apple will quite likely have a completely notch-free screen. Apple is reportedly said to use its own fingerprint technology rather than using a third-party provider. Apple has also settled its dispute with Qualcomm and we can expect the San Diego-based chipmaker to provide modem connectivity for the new iPhones. The iPhone X (Review) notch started a never-ending debate on how intrusive it felt on the screen. That's according to long-time Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Samsung, for example, implemented a new hole punch-like design in the displays of its new Galaxy S10 phones, which is less noticeable than the bezels on the Galaxy S9 and notches on rival phones. We've heard repeatedly that the 2019 iPhones, which are set to be revealed near the end of the year, will only be a modest improvement over the iPhone XS range.

Apple is expected to ramp up its iPhone lineup in 2020 to include three OLED models with screen sizes of 5.4 inches, 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. There have also been rumours of a China-specific model with Touch ID support.

The TrueDepth camera that powers Face ID requires several front-facing sensors that occupy plenty of space, hence the need for a notch. However, Oppo and Xiaomi have demonstrated under-display cameras already, with Oppo saying it'll be in a handset soon. Samsung, on the other hand, has used circular and pill-shaped front camera cutouts to avoid the notch. However, such reports and rumors must be taken with a grain of salt.

It's not the first time we're hearing rumors about Apple ditching Face ID in order to return to Touch ID, in one form or another.

However an advert released earlier this week, Apple claims that their Face ID is "safer and easier" than Touch ID.
