U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta after top Democrats called for the minister's resignation over his role in a non-prosecution agreement with billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein in a sex-crimes case years ago.
On Monday, the USA attorney in Manhattan said it was not bound by the 2008 deal and accused Epstein of luring dozens of girls, some as young as 14, and coercing them into sex acts.
On Tuesday, two women who say they were Epstein victims years ago gave interviews on network television welcoming the new charges.
'I also don't think that people like Alan Dershowitz should be on TV right now while they're being accused of being involved, ' she said.
Epstein served just 13 months in county jail and was forced to register as a sex offender after that Florida case.
Kaine said on Monday that Acosta "must go" as a result of the "sweetheart deal" he signed off on for Epstein.
Federal prosecutors say Epstein paid underage girls for massages and then molested them at his homes in Florida and NY. Lois Frankel and Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., in sending a letter to President Donald Trump calling on Acosta, a former U.S. attorney in South Florida, to resign "due to his severe mishandling of the Epstein case, reinforced by the recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra, which found that the secretary violated the Crime Victims' Rights Act (CVRA) by secretly arranging a plea deal".
Trump told reporters on Tuesday that Acosta has been an "excellent secretary of labour".
"Look, Donald, I do know Jeff very well, I cannot have him going after younger girls", Houraney recalled of his dialog to The Occasions.

Addressing the 13-month sentence he helped Epstein get from Acosta in 2008, allowed him to leave for work six days a week, Dershowitz said: 'The job of a criminal defense attorney is to try to get the best possible deal'.
This comes after Epstein pleaded not guilty Monday to sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.
Houraney was also one of many to accuse Trump of sexual harassment, this time toward his former girlfriend and business partner, Jill Harth, who described an incident in 1997 as an attempted rape by Trump.
Now facing charges of sex trafficking and new accusations of raping underage girls, Acosta has drawn fire. "No doubt about it - Jeffrey enjoys his social life", Trump was quoted saying.
"The same woman that accused me claimed to have had dinner with Bill Clinton and two underage girls on Jeffrey Epstein's island, claimed to have met Al Gore and Tipper Gore", said Dershowitz. "We strongly believe that Secretary Acosta was negligent in his duty to represent the best interests of the victims and the USA government".
Dershowitz is a frequent guest on Fox News and has appeared on the network dozens of times since it was revealed last fall that he was on Epstein's legal team when they pressured Acosta to cut a deal. "There were all of these puzzle pieces that were out there, and when you put all of these puzzle pieces together, with the passage of time, there was this really damning story". "I wasn't a fan", Trump said. But in court documents, a Florida lawyer representing several of Epstein's alleged victims contended the Wall Street financier was barred from Mar-a-Lago after an unspecified incident involving a teenage girl.
