  • Feds plan to deport 1 million illegal immigrants: Trump official

Last month, acting ICE director Mark Morgan said the agency wants to uphold the values of "humanity, compassion and dignity" and he hoped the mass roundup of migrants in the USA illegally would send a "powerful message" of deterrence to Central Americans considering the unsafe passage north.

One of the Trump administration's top immigration officials said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is preparing waves of operations to remove a total of one million migrants who have been ordered deported by judges.

Ken Cuccinelli, acting director of the Citizenship and Immigration Services, said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has final removal orders for approximately 1 million immigrants living in the USA illegally.

"They're ready to just perform their mission, which is to go and find and detain and then deport the proximity one million people who have final removal orders. They've been all the way through the due process and have final removal orders", Cuccinelli said.

ICE operations would include "collateral arrests", meaning that undocumented immigrants who are not directly targeted by agents will also be detained.

While saying the pool is "enormous", Cuccinelli walked back the number moments later when told reports said the number would be in the "thousands".

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that raids to capture and deport large numbers of undocumented people living in the country would begin "shortly", while pro-immigrant activists promised that their communities would be " lists "when the agents arrive. "It's important to note, here we are talking about ICE doing its job as if it's special".

Speaking to Face the Nation on CBS he insisted that ICE officers were just "doing their job" and said deportations "should be going on on a rolling basis", amid fierce political tensions over immigration. The highest number of yearly deportations came during the Obama administration in 2012, when the agency removed approximately 410,000 undocumented immigrants.

Efforts to reform the USA immigration system have failed under both Republican and Democratic administration, and there is now no legislation with sufficient bipartisan support to pass in both chambers of Congress, especially during the timeline Mr. Trump demanded.

So far this fiscal year, deportations have hit 282,000.
