The DPO further said rescue operation is underway and hydraulic cutters have been called at the site to retrieve dead bodies, it added.

A collision between a passenger train and a stationary freight train near the central town of Rahim Yar Khan in Pakistan has killed at least 10 people, with more than 70 others injured, according to police and hospital officials in Pakistan.

Quetta-bound Akbar Express crashes into freight train parked at Walhar station.

The passenger train is believed to have swtiched to a wrong track while it was passing near a railway station where the freight train was stationed on a loop line, Geo News stated.

Injured are being shifted to the hospitals of Sadiqabad and Rahim Yar Khan where an emergency has been declared.

He said that heavy machinery was being used to rescue passengers who were stuck in the train, adding that they were being provided with food and water.

The engine of the Akbar Express was completely destroyed in the accident while three compartments were also damaged, police said.

Pakistan's aging railway network carries both passengers and goods across the country, but suffers periodic derailments and other accidents due to aging infrastructure.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, officials said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the victims and said he was saddened by the news.

Khan said on his official Twitter account that he has asked the railways minister to take emergency steps to counter decades of neglect of railways infrastructure and ensure safety standards.
