Cape Town - Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel for the club's pre-season tour in the United States.

The 33-year-old was due to fly out to the US with the rest of the squad on Thursday but the club announced earlier in the day that the defender would not be travelling.

Reports suggest that the experienced stopper asked to be released from his contract this summer, only for the club to refuse.

Should Koscielny leave the Emirates before the transfer window closes, he'll depart with two FA Cups and a Europa League final runners-up medal to his name.

The retired France worldwide has made a total of 353 appearances for the Gunners, in which he's found the back of the net 27 times.

Should an actual offer come in for Koscielny this summer, then they would consider it, but so far there have been no official bids submitted for the defender.

However, Arsenal are continuing to stand firm - and this may be the tigger for the decision the player has made.

"Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the U.S. for our pre-season tour", a statement by Arsenal said. "We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time".

The Gunners begin their pre-season campaign against Colorado Rapids on July 16 before facing Bayern Munich, Roma and Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup. A £27 million (€34m) deal has been agreed for Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba, but he will spend the coming season back in France on loan with his former club.
