  • Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein arrested in NY on sex charges

The United States attorney's office in Manhattan made the new allegations in a court filing asking that Mr. Epstein be denied bail while he awaits trial, saying the payments were evidence that he might try to influence witnesses if he were not detained.

Epstein has pleaded not guilty. Epstein is due back in court Monday for a bail hearing.

His lawyers fetch no longer but commented on the payout claims.

Acosta has faced public backlash since Epstein was arrested in NY on Monday on fresh sex trafficking and conspiracy charges involving underage girls.

Prosecutors said Epstein sent a total of $350,000 (£278,000) to two suspected co-conspirators late previous year. They didn't determine the two individuals who purchased the cash.

Prosecutors said in Friday's filing that they had learned of the payments to potential witnesses from financial records obtained from an unnamed financial institution.

One reason Epstein may not have been officially registered as a sex offender in New Mexico is tied to the way the state law is written.

According to an indictment against him, Epstein arranged for girls under the age of 18 to perform nude "massages" and other sex acts, and paid some girls to recruit others, from at least 2002 to 2005.

He has requested to be allowed to wait for trial below dwelling arrest, but prosecutors argued in the courtroom filing on Friday that he would possibly tranquil be kept in the help of bars.

Prosecutors say the payments were made in November 2018 after a story in the Miami Herald broke listing the details of a plea deal he struck with federal authorities to avoid charges.

Democratic U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee who has called on Acosta to testify on the Epstein matter, said in a statement: "Secretary Acosta's role in approving the extremely favourable deal for Jeffrey Epstein raises significant concerns about his failure to respect the rights of the victims, many of whom were children when they were assaulted".

The weird declaration raised a lot of eyebrows on social media, where it did not take long for the statement to go viral. Earlier he dubbed Prince Charles as the Prince of Whales (yes, the sea mammal), when he's actually the Prince of Wales.

Mr Acosta, who at the time was a prosecutor in Florida, negotiated the plea deal under which Epstein served only 13 months in a county jail after pleading guilty to a single charge of soliciting prostitution from a minor. Epstein did neither and the NYPD did not enforce the requirements, the New York Post reported.

US President Donald Trump instructed reporters that he and Mr Acosta spoke on the phone earlier on Friday and that it became Mr Acosta's resolution to step down.

Acosta said he didn't want his involvement in Epstein's case to overshadow the president's agenda and said his resignation would be effective next week.

"It would be selfish for me to stay in this position and continue talking about a case that is 12 years old".

Trump, who has fired numerous cabinet and other administration officials during his 2 1/2 years in the White House, said it was Acosta's idea to step down.

Novel York-born Epstein labored as a teacher sooner than getting into into finance.

Prior to the criminal cases against him, he was best for his wealth and high-profile connections.

Mr Trump, former president Bill Clinton and Britain's Prince Andrew had all previously been members of Mr Epstein's social circle over the years.

"He in all fairness a few fun to be with", he stated. "It is even acknowledged that he likes handsome ladies folk as powerful as I manufacture, and a lot of them are on the youthful facet".

Acosta would not say if he would make the same decision regarding Epstein now, considering the power of the #MeToo movement that led to the downfall of several powerful men publicly accused of sex crimes by women.
