Pakistan joins US, Russia and China call for Afghan ceasefire

The NATO-led security alliance in Afghanistan says an American soldier was killed "in action" Saturday, which brings to 11 the number of deaths among the US military this year in the Afghanistan.

In a telephone interview, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said the terrorist group was behind Saturday's killing, even as USA peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has been holding talks with the Taliban in recent weeks to try and negotiate an end to the war in Afghanistan.

Abdul Latif Rustayee, the director of a hospital in Qala-e-Naw, said the 10 wounded, including four security force members, were rushed to hospital.

Two U.S. service member were killed on June 26 when attacked by the Taliban under small arms fire in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, the Pentagon said. Police said the attack targeted Malik Toor, a pro-government militia commander, who was killed in the blast.

According to the US Department of Defense policy, the name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete.

The violence comes amid intensified US -led efforts to strike a deal with the Taliban to bring an end to the 18-year-old Afghan war.

The soldier is the 10th member of the USA military to be killed this year - compared to 12 in all of 2018.

US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has been holding talks with the Taliban in recent weeks to try and negotiate an end to the war in Afghanistan.

Pakistan, which supported Afghanistan's former Taliban regime, on Friday joined the United States, Russia and China in a call on the insurgents to agree to a ceasefire and negotiations with Kabul.
