Authorities said Saturday police shot and killed a man who was armed with a rifle and throwing apparent explosives at an immigration prison in Washington state.

"The male attempted to ignite a large propane tank and set out buildings on fire", a statement released by the Tacoma police department said. The officers say the man wore a satchel and was holding flares, the Seattle Times reported.

Officers responded to the incident around 4 a.m. and called out to the man before shots were fired.

The officers involved include: a 45-year-old who has been with the Tacoma Police Department for 20 years, a 27-year old with four years on the force, a 28-year old with one year as a Tacoma police officer, and a 24-year old with nine months on the force. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tacoma police.

After the gunfire, officers took cover, contained the area and set up medical aid a short distance away, police said. She said she didn't know if the man fired at the officers.

Detectives and forensics were processing the scene Saturday morning; the man's name has not been released. No officers were injured.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, police said.
