Tension had further soared between the two sides after a brutal raid on a longstanding protest camp outside army headquarters in the capital Khartoum that killed dozens of demonstrators and wounded hundreds on June 3.

The protest movement, the Alliance for Freedom and Change, had called for marches - dubbed "Justice First" - across the country on Saturday to mark 40 days since the raid.

Sudan's military rulers say they have foiled an attempted coup and arrested several security officers thought to have been involved in the abortive putsch.

The deal, which also includes an FDFC-appointed cabinet, was meant to end a weekslong political deadlock between the military and protesters since the Khartoum sit-in site was cleared. Authorities, however, put the death toll at 61, including three from security forces. "What between us is a real and important partnership to bring Sudan out to safety and ensure that no problems will occur", said Mohamed Hamdan Daqlu, the TMC's deputy chairman, when addressing a popular rally in Nahr al-Neel State, north of the capital Khartoum Saturday.

Rasha Awad, editor of the online Sudanese newspaper Altaghyeer, said the military council's actions will determine what happens next.

Protesters were seen waving Sudanese flags and posters that read: "Freedom, Peace and Justice" and "Civilian (authority) is the people's choice".

Chanting "Blood for blood, we won't accept compensations", crowds of protesters marched in Khartoum's northern district of Bahari, a protest hotbed since demonstrations first erupted in December against the then regime of now ousted president Omar al-Bashir.

Last week, the military and FDFC representatives announced that they had reached a power-sharing agreement amid robust African and global pressure.

Hundreds rallied in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum.

Under the reported deal, five seats would go to the military and five to civilians, with an additional seat given to a civilian agreed upon by both sides.

He vowed to move forward to sign the power sharing agreement and for its implementation. They also agreed on an independent Sudanese investigation into the deadly crackdown by security forces on the protests last month - though it's unclear if anyone will be held accountable.

The military and a pro-democracy coalition agreed last Friday on a joint sovereign council that will rule for a little over three years while elections are organized. A military leader is to head the 11-member council for the first 21 months, followed by a civilian leader for the next 18.

"The regular forces were able to foil the attempt", he said, but did not say when the attempt was made.
