Chennaiites have been taking measures to cut their water consumption down to a bare minimum, with hoteliers switching to the traditional method of serving meals on banana leaves, automobile service centers opting to dry wash of vehicles, and even large commercial establishments and IT parks installing atomizers on water taps to cut down free flow.

The Chennai metro has turned off its air conditioning, farmers have been forced to stop watering their crops, and offices have asked staff to work from home. A special train with 50 wagons has been sent to Chennai to help the citizen in this hour of need. "Authorities yesterday filled tanks with water and loaded them onto a train". It is a commuters' railway hub and comes under the Southern Railway zone.

"Tamil Nadu has received no rain in six months". The train, in a bid to aid the residents suffering due to the severe water crisis, reached the city of Chennai in the afternoon.
