  • Former id boss Tim Willits is now the creative chief of World War Z dev Saber Interactive

However, we didn't know what was next for the man behind games like Quake II and Doom 3. He joined id in 1995 after impressing the company with Doom levels he created and distributed for free over the internet. He was also the creative director for Quake Live and Rage. While he says leaving id Software was indeed hard, he had to ultimately keep in mind what was best for him and what he would end up enjoying more.

'It was a good time to move over, ' said Willits of his massive move.

Speaking with Fortune, Willits said the appeal of the position was that he'd be able to return to an indie studio-style environment.

Tim Willits, one of the historical personalities and former head of id Software, has just announced that he has changed company, thus moving to Saber Interactive with the new Chief Creative Officer.

Saber Interactive's most recent game would be World War Z, although the company has also created NBA Playgrounds and is now working with CD Projekt Red on bringing The Witcher 3 to the Nintendo Switch.

Saber Interactive encompasses five studios and more than 500 employees, but despite those numbers, Willits insists it operates more closely to an indie studio than large companies like Bethesda or Activision. "It's nearly like a marriage, for lack of a better description...." The last few years have been transformative for Saber as we expand both as a development partner for third-party IPs around the world and a creator of our own brands - and there's no better person than Tim to lead our vision as a studio into the future.

Willits found Saber's impetus and small, focused team to be refreshing, saying "smaller teams are exciting and fun". When someone has a good idea, we jump on board and develop it. If it doesn't work, we change it quickly.
